Our Connection With God (Blog Series) – Part 3

… Continued

“O Shvetaketu ! The consumed food becomes of three types. The gross part of it becomes waste, the medium part of it becomes the meat and the subtle most part of it becomes the mind. Similarly, the consumed water becomes of three types. The gross part of it becomes urine, the medium part of it becomes blood and the subtle most part of it becomes the Prana (vital energy). Similarly, the consumed rich product content becomes of three types. The gross part of it becomes bones, the medium part of it becomes marrows and the subtle most part of it becomes the speech (it gives the strength required to speak). Therefore, mind has majority of food, Prana has majority of water and speech has majority of rich products content.”

“In deep sleep, all the individuals come to the truth which is their own self but without being aware it.”
“Just like a bird tied with a rope tries to fly in different directions but unable to do so, it again comes back to the where it has been tied originally, similarly the mind also tries to fly in different directions but comes back to Prana. The mind is bound by the Prana within the body.”

“The body surely has its roots in the food, in the water and in the consumed rich products as the body cannot be rootless. Similarly, the whole universe has its root in the truth which is the formless existence. That formless existence itself is the foundation for the whole universe and that formless existence itself is the asylum for the whole universe.”

“When a person is on deathbed, his speech gets dissolved into the mind, the mind gets dissolved into the Prana and the Prana get dissolved into that transcendental deity which is the formless existence.”

Here, two things should noted :

1. Although everyone attains the formless existence in the deep sleep still the deep sleep is not same as self-realization because deep sleep is a temporary state of mind which occurs on its own and is totally devoid of any kind of understanding. The self-realization comes with the actual understanding of our true formless nature. So attaining formlessness in deep sleep is not enough for self-realization but understanding that formlessness as our real self is required for self-realization.

2.In one of the above statements, Aaruni is saying that the dying person merges into that formless existence. However, when an ignorant person who is not aware of the fact that the formless existence is his true self and not his person-hood, dies with his sense of individuality, he does not get liberated and keeps travelling in the world births after births as an individual on account of his ignorance.

Aaruni said “That subtle formless existence is the soul of all these things. That formless existence is the truth, that is the soul and O Shvetaketu! You are that!”

After listening to this, Shvetaketu could not understand that if everyone attains the formlessness in the deep sleep then how come they do not understand that they have attained it?

So he asked his father Aaruni “O Father, please explain it to me again”. Aaruni said “ Ok Shvetaketu, I will explain it to you again”.

I love this one! It helps me with the example to simplify the deeper meaning of “pure consciousness”. I like the use of example of food being classified intro three categories.
