Our Connection With God (Blog Series) – Part 4

“O Shvetaketu ! Just like the honeybees bring essence of different trees and unite all those essence to create the honey, in that honey the different essence do not recognize themselves as individual essence brought from a particular tree, similarly people do not recognize the fact that they have attained the truth (in deep sleep).”

“Therefore after the deep sleep, due to the lack of recognition of unity with the ultimate truth, they all again become tiger, lion, pig, mosquitoes, insects etc. which they were before the deep sleep”.

Here a point is to be noted that although Aaruni is talking in terms of deep sleep but still these points are applicable to death also. The experience of deep sleep is same for every creature yet during waking state they identify themselves as a particular species like lion, tiger, human etc. Similarly after death also the identity of an individual is lost temporarily till he reincarnates in some other form as some other individual. The reincarnation takes place according karmas and unfulfilled desires of that individual.

So the one in whom all the creatures enter during deep sleep and after death, and again from whom they come back according to their karmas –

“That subtle formless existence is the soul of all these things. That formless existence is the truth, that is the soul and O Shvetaketu! You are that!”

Having heard this, Shvetaketu had a doubt that if all creatures have come from that truth then how come they do not know that they have come from the truth?

So he asked his father Aaruni “O Father, please explain it to me again”. Aaruni said “ Ok Shvetaketu, I will explain it to you again”.

“O Shvetaketu ! Just like the rivers merge into ocean and come out of it in the form of rains. In the ocean they do not recognize themselves as ‘I am this river’, ‘I am this river’ etc. Also while in the form of river, they do not realize that they have come from the ocean only, Similarly, although all the creatures merge into the truth and again come back from it still they do not realize that they have come from the truth.”

“Having come back from the truth, they again become the tiger, lion, pig, mosquito, insect, human etc. according to their karmas.”

So in whom they all merge and from whom they come again –

“That subtle formless existence is the soul of all these things. That formless existence is the truth, that is the soul and O Shvetaketu! You are that!”

Having heard this, Shvetaketu had a doubt that if we go to deep sleep everyday and attain the truth then how come we come back again unlike a wave which arises in the ocean again sets back and merge with the ocean forever?

So he asked his father Aaruni “O Father, please explain it to me again”. Aaruni said “ Ok Shvetaketu, I will explain it to you again”.
